When times are tough, people try to control their spending in an effort to manage the uncertainty to come. However, some women reach for a different kind of coping mechanism - beauty. 

A recent study showed that women splurge on high-end beauty products during tumultuous financial times. While this goes against the general trend of tightening the purse strings, women are investing in their image rather than the stock market. 

The study showed the increased purchasing of beauty products - sometimes referred to as the Lipstick Indicator - was true for women regardless of their income level.
