Yoga for pain relief

One of my New Year's resolutions was to improve my posture through yoga.

Even though the main reason why I took it up was to improve my posture (and flexibility), it also had another benefit that I didn't really expect - it's a great stress reducer. It turns out that's not all it's capable of doing.

A recent study by York University showed that yoga boosts the stress-busting hormone, cortisol and in turn reduces the physical and psychological symptoms of chronic pain in women with fibromyalgia.

The study's lead author, Kathryn Curtis, a PhD student in York’s Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health, explains:

"Yoga promotes...that we are not our bodies, our experiences, or our pain. This is extremely useful in the management of pain."

So the next time you're suffering with a bad headache, consider reaching for the yoga mat before the ibuprofen.

What's your favourite method to reduce stress?

  2. Brisk walking or jogging.

I went to a yoga class once and fell asleep, so I knew it wasn't for me.
