Well Heeled

Louboutin, Blahnik, Choo - just hearing those names makes many women's credit cards get itchy - they are the gold standard in the world of shoes.

Women's obsession with footwear leaves many men scratching their heads - which might explain why a recent survey showed that 14 percent of women admit to "hiding at least one purchase" of shoes from their significant other. The survey also showed that more than fifty percent of women own more than 10 pairs and 13 percent have more than 30 pairs - that's a lot of closet space.

What is the attraction of shoes? Is it their power to transform an outfit? Or is it how wearing a pair of high heels makes you stand up a little straighter?

Whatever the reason, one in five women admitted shoe shopping just to cheer themselves up, it's clear that fancy footwear has a powerful effect on us.

Certain shoes can be status symbols - pull on a pair of the latest Christian Louboutins and watch all your girlfriends drool with envy. Your feet may not be as understanding after wearing them all night - but that's what foot massages and ice baths are for, right?

One thing is for certain, after carefully putting an outfit together for a special event, there is no finer compliment than hearing, "I love those shoes..."

How many shoes is too many? What are the essential shoes that you think every woman should have in her closet?

  1. Can you really have too many shoes?! ;)

I think that shoes have a transformational effect on women that most men just can't understand. Most of us women look at shoes as an integral part of a whole outfit, while men generally see shoes more functionally - hence the disparity in the amount of pairs that each gender possesses.

In terms of essentials - well, always a black pair of pumps, black is a safe bet. Colour for the spring and summer, depending on one's particular style, there's quite a range.

I'm not too style-savvy, so I'll leave it there! ;)

  3. Hi Melanie,

This post is great! I know for sure women hide a few of their purchases as I see it when I ring in their sales at my boutique! Many women leave behind the shoe boxes at the shop to hide their new shoes! When we are having a bad day and we aren't loving our clothes...a new pair of shoes always fit and make us feel fabulous!!

I love shoes.. not sure you can ever have too many. They change the look of many different outfits.

Thanks for your great comments and following my blog! Glad to have found you.

  4. @Samantha]

Black pumps are essentials. Although a brightly coloured pair can be just as versatile and also a closet staple!

I have no idea how many pairs @Samantha has, but I have enough that I don't dare to count them!

Thanks for your comment! I agree that you can never have too many shoes. It's just the storing of them that gets tricky!

  7. I don't know how many I have, but I unfortunately have hardly any good quality ones. I've HEARD the luxury brand shoes are much more comfortable so it's really like spending $ on 5 pairs of cheaper shoes :P I haven't quite come to this method of justification yet.

  8. @Elaine A

Some of them are a bit more comfortable - others not so much. If a heels high enough, let's face it, it really just isn't made for walking!

If there is a built-in platform & rubber sole, that usually helps a lot!
