Fashion''s big night

I think most of us can agree. The best part about the Oscars is the fashion. Admit it...did you even see all the Best Picture nominees? Don't worry, neither did most of the Academy.

Here's my top five best dressed of the night:

Gwyneth Paltrow

Stunning simplicity in Calvin Klein Collection. Just looking at her in this dress makes me want to try the Tracy Anderson Method. And the sleek, straight hair (courtesy of hair genius Harry Josh) - so modern.

Cate Blanchett

In Givenchy Couture, she is by far the most original and best dressed of the night for me.

Mila Kunis

Beautiful and sexy in an Elie Saab Couture dress.

Amy Adams

In an unexpected silhouette and rich, jewel-toned L'Wren Scott dress, Amy shows us she isn't afraid to take risks.

Celine Dion

Usually, Celine is so over the top, but this understated Giorgio Armani Prive dress shows off her amazing body (even after twins!) and illustrates how sometimes less really is more.

I know a lot of you probably have Halle Berry on your best dressed list. And why not, she looked amazing in her Marchesa dress:

But, she didn't make my top five and here's why: too safe. Too boring! She has a killer body, she's gorgeous. We get it. But why not take a risk once in a while? After all, isn't that what real style is all about?

Stay tuned for another post this week on Oscar trends and how to wear them in everyday life.

I'd love to hear what you thought of the fashion at the Academy Awards. Who was your best dressed?

  1. I loved Mila's dress. It stood out for me :)

  2. Nice blog! I agree on all, except for Gwyneth--but that probably has to do with my personal distaste for

I would also include Hailee Steinfeld. Lovely, elegant, and age-appropriate!

What did you think of Jennifer Lawrence's dress? All the critics seemed to be all over it.

  3. @Michelle

I absolutely agree with you on Hailee!

Re: Jennifer Lawrence - she was on my short list. Loved the red and understated elegance. Plus the luscious, flowing blonde hair.

  4. Not sure I agree with your take on Cate Blanchett. Her dress reminded me of an elaborate picture frame ... which asks the question: what are they trying to frame?

  5. I totally agree with your picks! But for me, Cate was SO far ahead of the pack, this list could be a list of one. LOVE.

  6. Great picks - Cate was definitely daring, though I agree her chest looked like a picture frame. But Elie Saab's gowns? By far my favourite of the entire 2011 awards season. So pretty and feminine.

  7. Mila was divine. Natalie Portman was stunning (although the front hemline didn't work, the rest of the dress, including the neckline, was lovely on her). Gwyneth on the red carpet -- loved that Calvin Klein.

Cate Blanchett does risk better than pretty much anyone.

Halle Berry looked like she'd shopped her Award-show closet. She's worn so many dresses like that before. Something sleek and in an unexpected colour would have been killer on her.

Surprised to see Celine on your list, but I understand -- that's an unexpectedly chic dress for her.

  8. @Anonymous

I see what you mean re: picture frame. I never thought of it that way.

I still love the architecture of the dress though and the splash of lemon yellow.

Thanks so much for weighing in!

  9. @Erin H

I seriously debated just putting her up here alone. How does she always look so AMAZING?!

  10. @chantelsimmons

Thanks for your comment Chantel! Elie Saab does design some beautiful dresses.

  11. @Janine . BEAUTYGEEKS

I think with Celine I was just so surprised to see her look so refined. Her dress was an example of how to wear Gwyneth's dress at an older age.

Re: Natalie Portman. I thought the colour was good, but agree with you on the hemline.

Thanks for contributing to the debate Janine!

  12. Agree, agree, agree. I have the same list. Amy Adams could have done with out the necklace - too much going on. Cate looked AMAZING.

  13. @Zoey

I can see what you mean re: Amy Adams, but I kind of loved it anyway. Maybe if it was any colour BUT green, I wouldn't feel the same way.

    Thanks for your comment Zoey!

  14. I'm not sure about the Cate Blanchett dress. I know that it was a hit with a lot of people but it looks a bit boxy and square to me. Just sayin'...

On the other hand, Halle Berry looked amazing in her dress, as always. Does she ever look bad? I don't think so!

  15. @Samantha

I know Cate's dress is a bit controversial but I still love it.

Halle Berry always looks amazing and has the body of a goddess so why doesn't she take a chance for a change?

  16. I have to say that Mila Kunis was def my favourite!
Looking at a different age group, Helen Mirren looked super classy in her dress as well.

Nicole Kidman's dress was horrendous IMO. And Helena Bonham Carter looked like she forgot she was going to the Oscar's not a shooting of Harry Potter.

Great blog, Mel. And I agree with all your choices. Cate's dress is not my fave but she pulls it off really well.

  17. @Anonymous

Thanks PJ! re: Nicole. I understand WHY she picked the dress (it looked INCREDIBLE on the runway), but it just didn't translate in real life.

Helen Mirren always dresses well and so age appropriate!
